Three Symptoms of a Leaking Roof

As locals in the Pacific Northwest know, our ample rainfall is responsible for some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Unfortunately, it’s also responsible for wreaking havoc on our roofs over time. Water damage is generally easy to fix when spotted early, but can create big problems down the road if left untreated. Before you call your roofing contractor in Vancouver, WA, check for these three indicators of  a leaking roof.

1. Mold and Algae

Rain and seaside weather both work to create the perfect breeding grounds for mold and algae. While noticing either of these on your roof is certainly unpleasant, it’s not necessarily the sign of a full-fledged leak. Mold and algae are usually precursors to further damage, so it’s a good idea to have them treated sooner rather than later.

2. Ceiling Spots

Ceiling spots are usually obvious to the naked eye and can reveal quite a bit about the condition of the roof. These occur when water seeps in through holes, cracks, or dents in the roof. Often you’ll notice a dark spot or other watermarks on the ceiling above you. Leaks can also present themselves as staining around vents and chimneys. A ceiling spot is almost always a telltale sign there is a leak, so it’s a good idea to schedule an inspection.

3. Shingle Damage

If you have a shingled roof, leaks can be diagnosed by checking for warping or rot. Shingles that curl or warp in shape are usually the result of absorbing excess water. If left untreated, curling shingles can lead to further damage as they leave the roof mat vulnerable. When a roof mat absorbs water, moisture can collect onsite and lead to full-blown roof rot. Roof rot is a serious problem that can lead to structural damage and the need for replacement.

For questions about roofing, maintenance, or re-roof in Vancouver, WA, be sure to contact a reputable roofing contractor in your area. If you suspect you may have a leaking roof, don’t wait. Contact a professional right away before the damage has time to cause larger problems.
